I don't think Orochimaru would have gotten much affection and warmth as a child. Living on his own and not having many friends, because before the Sannin became a team, I doubt Jiraiya and Tsunade were his friends, so for most of his childhood, he would have been all alone.

I also think his first encounter with affection and care would have come from the Third and it must have come as a surprise to him, not having parents or someone to congragulate him on good grades or something.

I always think of Gaara's childhood when I think about Orochimaru. I believe something must have made him into what he is now.

My opinion. Don't argue with me, I'll have none of that "He was evil from the start" crap.
